Coffee Table - The Best One for Your Beverages and Magazines!

Modern coffee tables are low tables placed near couches or sofas to hold beverages or decorative items. Glass coffee tables and those constructed of other materials can become an integral part of
the interior of your home and serve purposes that are both stylish and functional. Coffee table designs date back to the tables used by the Turks in special coffee rooms or gardens. Today designers build coffee table models to integrate seamlessly with a range of furnishing so that a round coffee table or a teak coffee table can easily be found to match your existing pieces or a custom unit can be crafted from coffee table plans drawn specifically for your room.

Purpose of Coffee Tables

Whether you opt for a classic or modern coffee table, the piece is designed to maximize the appearance of your living room and to increase the comfort of your guests. The tables are an excellent informal surface from which to serve snack and beverages as well as being a serviceable repository for such items as remote controls, magazines, newspapers, and decorative photography or art books. A trunk style coffee table provides additional storage space and many pieces are strong enough to serve as extra seating during gatherings.

Types Of Coffee Tables

Coffee tables are available in various shapes, sizes, colors and materials. Popular traditional materials include glass, metal and wood while contemporary and modern pieces might be produced of steel or molded plastic. Most coffee tables are long and rectangular although any shape is popular. If your room is small and arranged as a "conversation pit," for instance, a round or triangular table might be more efficient.

Metal Coffee Table
These coffee tables are made of wrought iron, bronze or copper. They give a contemporary look and are often outfitted with glass tops. (Some metal tables have the added flexibility to expand or even to fold up.)
Glass Coffee Table
Glass coffee tables are ideal for places like reception areas or lobbies. They allow the carpet and flooring to remain visible and when outfitted with a lower shelf can serve as a protective showcase for art objects. Though glass coffee tables look striking, they are breakable and may not be advisable for home with small children.
Wooden Coffee Table
Classic wooden tables provides warmth and are sturdy pieces that will serve you for a long time. Popular woods include teak, mahogany, cedar, oak, and hard maple. These tables tend to compliment more traditional and informal rooms and are often cabinet pieces with spaces for storing magazines or items like photo albums.
Contemporary Coffee Table
Contemporary coffee tables are usually modular in appearance with sleek, minimalist lines. They might be crafted from marble, molded plastic, ceramic tiles, natural stones or various stylish and high end metals like brushed aluminum or chrome.
Geometric Shaped Coffee Tables
Tables configured in a unique geometric shape such as a triangle or a polygon work best in modern rooms or those that employ retro styles from the 1950s and 1960s when geometric pieces of all kinds were in vogue. The basic concept when selecting a unique shape for a coffee table is that it balances the look of the room and does not clash with the other pieces of furniture.
