Tips on Laminate Flooring Installation and Maintenance

How to select laminate flooring?

Obviously your choice of laminate flooring depends on your personal taste and requirements.
A few factors to consider if you are contemplating buying laminate flooring are:
  • Considering design choices. What type of design and which colour will go with the rest of your interior? Remember that picking a slightly neutral colour will possibly be a wise choice even if you decide to change your interior at some point.
  • The price factor. How much can you spend on your new floor? It always pays to shop around to try and get the best deal. Compare prices and don't be afraid to ask for a good deal if you are buying flooring for a large room. Discount laminate flooring is often just as good as more expensive options.

The installation of laminate flooring

It is possible to install a laminate floor yourself. There are instruction videos on the market and the shop where you are purchasing your floor should be able to give you clear instructions on how to install your new flooring. Remember that laminate is a so-called floating floor meaning that the floor boards are not hammered into the ground or glued into the ground. A medium sized laminate floor should be installed in about 2-3 days if you are dong it yourself. A professional should be able to do the job in about a day. Laminate flooring installation is usually offered when you buy your flooring.

How to maintain laminate flooring

A laminate floor is very easy to maintain. There are special laminate flooring cleaners on the market and you should not have any trouble keeping your floor looking as good as new with some mopping and hovering on a regular basis. One thing you shouldn't do is:
  • Don't apply wax or acrylic floor finishes to your laminate floor. Wax will be absorbed by wood but as laminate floor boards are not made out of wood, the top layer will not absorb it. The same goes for acrylic cleaners.

The benefits of laminate flooring

Except for the fact that most laminate floors are cheaper than wooden floors there are other benefits to laminate flooring. The most important benefits are:
  • Laminate floors are durable and because the top layer of these floors is made of aluminum, the wear and tear on laminate flooring is significantly less that with wooden floors. Laminate wood flooring can damage easily.
  • A laminate floor is easy to maintain
  • With a bit of time and patience and some knowledge on how to approach the job, installing laminate flooring can be easy.

The limitations of laminate flooring

The main limitation of having laminate flooring installed in your home is the fact that this type of floor makes a specific sound if you walk on it. This tapping sound is annoying for some people and can be minimized with a layer of soundproof flooring under your laminate floor.

Installing laminate flooring in your home will be an investment that you will enjoy for many years to come. Laminate wood flooring looks good, is easy to maintain and is often cheaper than wood.
